This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. 

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work or intend to work within a large process operation in the chemical or similar industry or environment, and seek recognition for skills essential for operating equipment used in such processes.

Those learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to contribute to the maintenance of equipment, pertaining to the chemical industry. The selection of the equipment ensures that the recipient can:
  • Operate equipment in a large processing operation.
  • Or will be able to operate such equipment after minimal training.

    For the purpose of this standard the following is understood as equipment:
  • A machine or apparatus that which delivers a result or achieves a function in a chemical process.
  • A machine that is operated independently or in combination with other units in a chemical process.
  • Equipment is generally operated in the field but remote control may be used.

    The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the processes and procedures for equipment maintenance
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance purposes
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the preparation of a work area for maintenance
  • Prepare the work area for maintenance
  • Receive equipment back after maintenance is completed. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this standard will have demonstrated competence against the unit standards or the equivalent; Maintain health, hygiene and safety in a chemical environment, Describe chemical process operations and related process chemistry used in the chemical industry and Demonstrate an understanding of quality principles used in the chemical industry.
  • Learners working towards the full qualification will have demonstrated competence against the unit standards in the National Certificate in Chemical Operations - NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    1. The importance of standard operating procedures being implemented during maintenance is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Isolation procedures for all pertinent items of equipment for maintenance are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The "permit to work" procedures are followed and recommendations for permits to be cancelled are made. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Equipment for maintenance is located and shown to maintenance personnel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Standard operating procedures will include site operating instructions, instructions, orders, guidelines, policies, procedures and systems
  • This unit standard is limited to a minimum of 6 pieces of equipment listed: dryers, strippers, cooling towers, mixers, fans, conveying equipment, positive displacement pumps, centrifugal pumps, positive displacement compressors, filters, vessels, heat exchangers; Site procedures: permit to work procedures, isolating procedures, draining, venting, purging and flushing procedures; Site check tests: visual inspection, equipment integrity test and line up.
