PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who use security equipment for safety and security in the execution of their duties.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Select and carry security equipment effectively and safely.
  • Use correct security equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain security equipment.
  • Shut or close down security equipment correctly and safely.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Read, write and understand English.
  • Functional mathematical and numerical skills.

    1. The application of knowledge and understanding of using security equipment is demonstrated in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and workplace polices and procedure.

    2. Security equipment is used as per manufactures guidelines and policies and procedure of workplace

    3. Monitored signals, data and/or information are identified correctly.

    1. Relevant selected security equipment is inspected to establish service ability and to meet safety requirements.

    3. Visible faults are identified and actions taken according to workplace policies and procedures.

    1. Shut or close down security equipment in accordance with manufacturer specification, workplace policies and procedures.

    2. Document and submit all relevant reports for data capturing or storage in accordance with workplace policies and procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria:

  • An understanding of physical restraining or defensive techniques.

This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance.
