PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to gathering and establishing client requirements. /it is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and analysing client brief to meet client requirements
  • Conducting a survey to gather pertinent information
  • Analysing and applying data to the design
  • Producing a free-hand drawing of perceived proposal

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 3 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 3 on the NQF or equivalent.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Drawing will include freehand drawings, line drawings, photographs and manually drafted drawings
  • Active listening techniques will include eye contact, responding, questioning, replying, nodding and taking action.
  • Survey will include physical visit to site, access to electronic media, company specifications and instructions, international standards
  • Drawings will include general draughting, mechanical draughting, architectural / civil draughting, structural steel detailing, electrical draughting, piping and instrumentation draughting
  • Administrative and drawing office procedures will include documentation, filing, recording, saving, copying, issuing and reporting
  • Code of practice for engineering drawing will include SABS0111 and additional codes of practice
