PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to calculate the provisional position of a survey point from polar/traverse observations obtained in any working environment

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Display knowledge related to polar/traverse calculations
  • Calculate the position of a survey point
  • Complete the calculation process in accordance with survey standards

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learning Assumed to be in place
    NQF Level 3 numeracy and literacy, the ability to observe a survey point by the po-lar/traversing method and knowledge of co-ordinate systems will facilitate better un-derstanding and proficiency in this unit standard.

    Recognition of prior learning
    Any learner wishing to be assessed may arrange to do so without having to attend ad-ditional education and training. The learner and assessor will decide jointly on the most appropriate assessment procedure

    3. Limits of error relevant to the specific task are identified and the importance thereof understood and explained.

    4.Legal requirements relevant to calculations are understood and explained.

    5. Theory, Principles and terminology associated with map projections and co-ordinate geometry are understood and explained in accordance with task specific survey standards.

    4. Y, X and Z co-ordinates of the survey point are calculated and checked in accordance with task specific and accuracy requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and register with the FE / HE registrar.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA proce-dures.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accred-ited by the relevant ETQA.

  • Declared competent in all the outcomes of the National Assessor Unit Standards as
    stipulated by SAQA

    Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant must be provided (Portflio of Evidence)
