PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a cleaning services environment. Qualifying learners are able to buff, burnish and scrub floors in a commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, food handling, domestic and health care cleaning environment. |

UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
1. The scope of this unit standard is for any person who buffs, burnishes and scrubs floors.
2. A single disc machine in the context of this unit standard is an industrial scrubber, polisher or burnisher with a maximum diameter of 500 mm. 3. Pad and brush damage in the context of this unit standard includes but is not limited to damage caused by nails protruding from floors, skirting boards and doorstops. 4. The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, very repetitive and familiar, no generation of new ideas are needed and the person has no responsibility for the learning of others. RANGE STATEMENTS WHICH REFER TO ASSESSMENT CRITERIA IN THIS UNIT STANDARD 1. Accessories refer to but are not limited to pad driving discs, pads, brushes, and solution tanks and spray bottles. 2. Brushes refer to but are not limited to polypropylene, nylon, Tynex, union fibre and bassine brushes. 3. Chemicals refer to but are not limited to detergents, spray buffing chemicals and mop and buffing chemicals. 4. Dry dirt and litter refer to but are not limited to dust, paper litter and packaging material. 5. Hard floors refer to but are not limited to concrete, terrazzo, terracotta, quarry tiles, slate, granite, marble and wood. 6. Operating instruction refers to the manufacturer's operating instruction or an extract thereof. 7. Pads refer to but are not limited to red, blue, black, white, ultra high-speed and micro fibre pads. 8. Resilient floors refer to but are not limited to, vinyl, cushioned vinyl, asphalt, linoleum and profiled rubber. 9. Wet sticky dirt refers to but is not limited to food and beverage spillages. |

DEFINITION OF TERMS WITHIN THIS UNIT STANDARD 1. Build up refers to the combination of spray buffing chemical and dirt that collects in the pad during spray buffing. 2. High speed single disc machine: This is a single disc machine with an approximate rotational speed of 400 rpm. 3. Side-to-side burnishing method refers to the method best used in smaller areas 4. Slow speed single disc machine: This is a single disc machine with a maximum rotational speed of 200 R.P.M. 5. Ultra-speed burnishing machines have a rotational speed from 1000 rpm upwards. 6. Walk behind burnishing method refers to the method best used in large, open areas. |
