PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to identify the key blank to use before cutting a key. They are also able to duplicate standard and high security keys using key duplicating machines. The learners must be able to identify high security, master and safe keys in order to determine whether they may be able to be duplicated or not.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Identify key blanks needed for duplication.
  • Operate key duplicating machines.
  • Explain security aspects associated with duplicating and cutting keys.

    Identify key blanks needed for duplication.

    Key blank could include but are not limited to: latch, tubular, mortice, pin, pipe, cylinder, lever, flat and safe.

    Key blanks are identified according to type of keys. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Key types are identified in order to select the matching key. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The profile is matched with the original key. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate key duplicating machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Key duplicating machine is identified in order to determine which key it is able to be cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A key is cut using a key duplicating machine. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A key duplicating machine is used in accordance with operating instructions. A minimum of two keys must be cut: cylinder, mortice, flat key, tubular, safe keys.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Original key is inspected in order to determine integrity of the key. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Key is de-burred in order to avoid mechanical and physical problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    De-burred refers to the cleaning of the key.

    Key copy values are measured against the original within acceptable tolerances.

    Key copy values refer to depth and spacing measurements of the key.

    Level of security of the key is identified in order to determine whether a key may or may not be cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why authority must be obtained before cutting security keys are explained with examples.
