This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. |
PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of the learning is to control resources required for radiation protection processes and the implementation of radiation protection procedures. Competent control of radiological protection resources ensures health and safety of people, and protection of the environment. Efficient use of resources and procedure development are transferable competencies and learners credited with this unit standard can control stock in any environment and ensure that equipment used is in working order.
Credited learners are capable of: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners have already attained the following competencies:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Range statements are included where relevant with specific outcomes and assessment criteria. Radiation protection resources include human resources, physical resources, materials, equipment, etc. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Design systems to verify that routine instrumentation checks are conducted. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Checks can include visual, functionality, response, calibration checks, etc.: systems are work unit specific, and not organisation-wide. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Procedures to verify instrumentation checks are designed, developed and documented according to specification. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Instrumentation checks are verified using, for example, visual checks, functionality checks, response checks and calibration checks at specified frequencies. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
All relevant parameters and data that must be recorded during instrumentation checks are designed, developed and documented according to specification. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Quality assurance or quality control processes to verify compliance with specified procedures relating to instrumentation checks are designed, developed and documented according to specification. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Processes to maintain records relating to instrumentation checks are designed, developed and documented according to specification. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Assign required surveillance programme activities to relevant persons. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Required surveillance programme activities are assigned to relevant persons in accordance with the required work schedule. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Required surveillance programme activities are assigned to relevant persons in accordance with their experience, competencies and authorisations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Required surveillance programme activities are assigned to relevant persons in accordance with the work management programme, planning programme and priority schedules. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Allocate personnel monitoring equipment according to specified requirements. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Monitoring equipment includes electronic dosimetry, thermoluminescent dosemeters, etc. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Personnel monitoring equipment is allocated according to the radiological risk assessments and as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) reviews. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Personnel monitoring equipment is allocated according to the radiation work permits and safety instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Personnel monitoring equipment is allocated according to the anticipated and/or assessed radiological conditions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Personnel monitoring equipment is allocated according to the documented standards and procedures. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Maintain personal protective clothing and equipment according to specified requirements. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Maintenance includes condition and quantities, and availability. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Supplies and quantities of personal protective clothing and equipment are adequate and in accessible areas to meet the demand. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Radioactivity on personal protective clothing and equipment is maintained below prescribed radiological limits. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Inventories of personal protective clothing and equipment are maintained in a state of readiness for use. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Personal protective clothing and equipment are maintained in accordance with specified maintenance schedules. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 |
Maintain sampling materials stock at adequate levels. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Sampling material stock is maintained in appropriate and accessible areas to meet the demand. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Sampling material stock is maintained below prescribed radiological limits. |

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING |
Identify and solve problems where responses to problems show that such critical and creative thinking has been used to make responsible decisions when personnel monitoring equipment is allocated according to the anticipated and/or assessed radiological conditions. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING |
Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community to assign required surveillance programme activities to relevant persons. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING |
Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively when control documentation is administered according to specified requirements. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING |
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information when personnel monitoring equipment is allocated according to the radiological risk assessments and as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) reviews. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING |
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematic and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation when all relevant parameters and data that must be recorded during instrumentation checks are designed, developed and documented according to specification. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE |
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others when sampling material stock and radioactivity on personal protective clothing and equipment are maintained below prescribed radiological limits. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING |
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation when procedures to verify instrumentation checks are designed, developed and documented according to specification and supplies and quantities of personal protective clothing and equipment are adequate and in accessible areas to meet the demand. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
