PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of the learning is the management of radiological surveillance data to ensure that Quality Management System requirements for the type and quality of data collected are met. Improved quality of data improves an organisation's ability to protect people against the harmful effects of radiation, impacting positively on the health and safety of people and the environment. Adherence to Quality Management System requirements is important not only within the field of radiation protection, and, therefore, competence attained can be applied in any other field where Quality Management Systems are implemented. Working with data is also a transferable competence and enhances learners' ability to learn.
Credited learners are capable of: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners have already attained the following competencies:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Range statements are included where relevant with specific outcomes and assessment criteria. The typical scope of this unit standard is management of radiological surveillance data within a work unit/department/team, where Quality Management System requirements are provided. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Verify data against specified Quality Management System requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Data is managed in line with applicable procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Data is verified for technical accuracy as per applicable procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Area demarcation is assessed against specific requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Data entry requirements reflect area radiological information. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Analyse radiological surveillance data for trends. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Analysis is standardised and given. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Radiological hazards are accurately identified. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Trending of data is in line with given procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Trending information is accessible for future reference. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Abnormal trends that require investigation are accurately identified. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Organise data according to specified Quality Management System requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Data is captured in accessible formats. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Sorted data is accessible for future reference. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Data is captured as prescribed in specified recording procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Protective actions are identified based on data analysis. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Describe the implications of results for broader radiation protection contexts. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Implications are limited to a work unit, and a work unit within an organisational context. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Description of implications of results for surveillance meets prescribed surveillance programme requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Description of implications of results for demarcated areas is in line with operational standards. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Description of implications of results for protective equipment is meets given standards. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Description of implications of results for entry requirements for areas are correctly identified from results. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Description of implications of results for dose limits adhere to all relevant legal requirements. |

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING |
Identify and solve problems where responses to problems show that such critical and creative thinking has been used to make responsible decisions when protective actions are identified based on data analysis. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING |
Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community when trending information is accessible for future reference. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING |
Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively when legal requirements are adhered to regarding dose limits and data is captured as prescribed in specified recording procedures. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING |
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information to verify data against specified Quality Management System requirements, analyse radiological surveillance data for trends, and organise data according to specified Quality Management System requirements. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING |
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematic and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation to capture data in accessible formats. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE |
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others when protective equipment is prescribed as per given standards. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING |
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation when area demarcation is assessed against specific requirements and entry requirements reflect area radiological information and the implications of results for broader radiation protection contexts are described. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
