    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply the prescribed health and safety practices for conducting weighing and slitting of the wool and mohair bales. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: conveyors, forklifts, bale handling, lifting techniques, use of tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), personal protective clothing (PPC), good housekeeping, emergency stops. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for wearing the correct PPC during the weighing and slitting of wool and mohair bales are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Personal Protective Equipment is used correctly when weighing and slitting wool and mohair bales. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dangers of stepping or walking on the conveyors are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The stopping of conveyors through the use of 'emergency stops' is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The forklift operating procedures for transporting and positioning bales in the weighing and slitting process, as per the company's SOPs, are described.

    The prescribed lifting techniques that must be used in handling bales during the weighing and slitting process are demonstrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The operation of conveyors, for transferring wool and mohair bales to the weighing and slitting areas, as per the company's Standard Operating Procedures is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operation of a forklift, for transferring wool and mohair bales to the weighing and slitting areas, as per the company's Standard Operating Procedures is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of trolleys, for transferring wool and mohair from the temporary storage area to the weighing and slitting areas, as per the company's Standard Operating Procedures is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The processes for compiling the auction lots are described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the processes for weighing wool and mohair bales.

    The importance of conducting regular calibration of the scales is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The recording of the weights of wool and mohair bales, as per the company's Standard Operating Procedures, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The processes for the allocation of 'splits' to the various bins, as per the company's SOPs, are described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the role that bale slitting plays in the preparation for the wool and mohair auction.

    The role that the heating element plays in the maintenance of hygiene and the elimination of contamination during the slitting process is described.

    Conduct preventative maintenance checks on all machinery and equipment that is used in the weighing and slitting processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of regular calibration of the scales and the operational checks that must be conducted are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preventative maintenance checks for the conveyors and the frequency in which they must be conducted are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of regularly checking the emergency stops on the conveyors is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The daily checks that have to be conducted on the forklifts are detailed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of regularly testing the heating elements on the slitting machines and the procedures for their replacement are explained.

  • Understanding the possible cross contamination of the fibres that can result from faulty heating elements.
  • Inspecting the slitting positions for any uniformity of cuts and observe any areas that are regularly unselected.

  • Have experience or in depth knowledge of agriculture and food processing, specifically as it relates to wool.

    The Learner:
  • Is expected to perform the specific outcomes reflected in this unit standard without direct supervision.
