This Unit Standard requires learners to be able to demonstrate knowledge of refrigeration calculations and principles. Learners credited with this Unit Standard are capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the principles of a refrigeration system.
  • Demonstrating understanding of insulation and fouling.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of calculations relating to refrigeration.
  • Evaluating and reporting data.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4.

    The applications of a refrigeration system are explained and compared in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The characteristics of an ideal refrigerant are described in accordance with specified requirements.

    Demonstrate understanding of insulation and fouling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons for and the various methods of insulation and the requirements of insulating material are described in terms of the consequences to health and safety and are according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The symptoms of and the reasons for fouling and the appropriate action to be taken are explained according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The prevention of condensation underneath insulation, water logging and the effects on cooling efficiency are described according to specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate knowledge of calculations relating to refrigeration.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The duty and performance of a refrigeration plant circuit is calculated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The duty and performance of the condensing circuit is calculated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The duty and performance of the evaporating circuit is calculated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The plant duty and performance is determined by using a pressure-enthalpy diagram and is in accordance with specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Evaluate and report data.

    Plant performance is evaluated and necessary action is recommended in accordance with specified requirements.
