PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to independently measure and set the stagger and height of the contact wire on OHTE safely and correctly under "live" and/or isolated and earthed conditions according to company-specific procedures and instructions, thus contributing to the safe running of electric trains to prevent damage to pantograph and overhead track equipment and train delays in the rail sector.

    The necessary safety precautions at the worksite are taken to prevent injury to personnel.

    Work permit is obtained according to work permit procedures when work is performed under isolated and earthed conditions.

    Protection is placed correctly according to TWR. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Measure and set the stagger and height of the contact wire on OHTE in accordance with company specific procedures and instructions.

    The height of the contact wire in relation to the reading on the approved height and stagger gauge is measured and set correctly and safely in accordance with company specific procedures and instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Finalise the measuring and setting of the stagger and the height of the contact wire on OHTE. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The quality checks pertaining to the measuring and setting of the height and stagger gauge are performed in accordance with company specific procedures and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, equipment and material are removed safely and correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work site is cleared according to company-specific instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Protection is removed correctly in accordance with TWR. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work permit is cancelled correctly and timeously according to work permit procedures when permit was issued. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing or moderating a learner against this unit standard must be trained, qualified, certified and re-certified as an assessor/moderator in the OHTE/Substation division in accordance with the specific validation regulations relevant to the specific unit standard and registered with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or an ETQA has a Memorandum of Understanding with a relevant ETQA.
  • The relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA will oversee assessment and moderation of assessment according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessment. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.
