PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who work as field or laboratory assistants on a regular basis as part of an archaeological team. It may also be useful for learners in museums who do not have formal qualifications and learners on excavation sites who assist with excavations following set procedures

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining how archaeology is regulated in South Africa.
  • Interpreting the code of behaviour for professional archaeologists.
  • Explaining the role of archaeological standards of practice.
  • Explaining the social responsibility relating to human remains. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    Explain how archaeology is regulated in South Africa. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Legislation governing archaeology in South Africa is named and an indication is given of what each Act regulates. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legislation includes, but is not limited to, National Heritage Resources Act of 1999, National Environment Management Act, Environment Conservation Act of 1989, Human Tissues Act.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is explained with reference to the issuing of permits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of Provincial Heritage Resources Authorities (PHRA) is explained with reference to a selected province. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of the Association of Southern African Professional Archaeologists (ASAPA) is explained with reference to the regulatory function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons why archaeology is regulated are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interpret the code for professional archaeologists.

    The ASAPA code of ethics is explained with reference to attitudes and values.

    The ASAPA code of conduct is explained with reference to behaviour.

    Situations where improper behaviour should be reported are identified for three case studies.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedure for dealing with human remains and grave goods is explained with reference to legal requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures include human remains on site, in museums and in repositories.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons why human remains and grave goods are treated differently from other remains are explained with reference to cultural sensitivities.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
