PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for persons who will be involved in shore-based fishing operations where they will be responsible for the communication between shore and sea in order to ensure safety of those at sea.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply radio procedures
  • Analyse and interpret information received
  • Act on information received

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to the knowledge and understanding of communication regarding safety, arrival and clearances, products, stores, services, fishing operations, manning, weather, maintenance and repair.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply radio procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Setting up of the radio for communication is carried out as per defined legislative technical and company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Setting up: Radio frequency, positioning of radio, operating times, warm up, documentation for recording information.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Communication related defects are reported to the correct authorities for corrective action as per defined legislative and company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Operation of the radio is carried out as per specified legislative, user manual and company defined procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse and interpret incoming information from vessels.

    Information received is gathered from the vessels and recorded as per defined legislative and company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information received is analysed and interpreted as per the needs of the various vessels to defined legislative and/or company procedure.

    Emergencies situations are followed through as per specified legislative and/or company procedures.

    Act on incoming information to ensure safety of crew on vessels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Action plans and recommendations are made to satisfy the needs of the various vessels as per company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Recommendations and action plans are communicated to the relevant parties at sea and shore within agreed time frames and according to set company procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods of communication: Fax, e-mail, radio, telephone, verbal, written.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Execution of recommendations and action plans are managed to ensure that the decisions taken are in accordance with the compliance of company and legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Emergencies situations are followed through as per specified legislative and or company procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
