PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to explain surface treatments that are used in the firearms maintenance industry. A person credited with this unit standard will not apply surface treatments. He/she will identify and explain different surface treatments, their preparation methods, identify defects and send defective firearms to the appropriate specialist unit. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe the effects of surface treatment chemicals on the environment and health of persons.
  • Explain the reasons for applying surface treatment to firearms.
  • Explain the different surface treatments and their respective preparation methods.
  • Explain the defects found in and on different types of surface treatment.

    The influence of surface treatment chemicals on the environment is explained in terms of the Safety, Health and Environmental Act.

    The influence of surface treatment chemicals on health of persons is explained in accordance with the Safety, Health and Environmental Act.
