PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to equip learners with a thorough understanding of the occurrence of sexual offences in South Africa. The qualifying learner will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the nature, types and impact of sexual offences in the South African context. The learner will be able to provide initial support to victims and refer, using suitable referral systems.

The learner will use a variety of self-care strategies for themselves and their clients. A brief understanding of strategies aimed at perpetrators of sexual offences will be demonstrated.

A learner accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the historical context in which sexual offences occur in South Africa.
  • Define the different offences which may be categorised as "sexual offences".
  • Providing support using appropriate referral systems for victims of sexual offences.
  • Applying relevant strategies of "self care" to support victims of sexual offences.
  • Understanding strategies and programmes aimed at the perpetrators of sexual offences.

    Relevant legislation and policy includes: the Criminal Procedures Act, 51 (1997), the Service Charter for Victims of Crime (2004), The Minimum Standards on Services for Victims of Crime (2004), and the Sexual Offences Bill (2002).
