PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to be able to competently handle manually, materials in a workplace. Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Describing the specified health and safety requirements pertaining to the manual handling of materials in a workplace.
  • Demonstrating the safe manual handling of materials in a workplace.

    Describe the specified occupational health and safety requirements pertaining to the manual handling of materials in a workplace.

    Explanation of the types and size of material that can be manually handled safely in accordance with specified requirements confirms understanding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Understanding of the types of injuries that can arise from manually handling material in a workplace is demonstrated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Explanation of the handling techniques used to manually handle material is consistent with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Explanation of the environmental conditions that will have an affect on the learner's ability to manually handle material is consistent with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Demonstration of a basic understanding of the physical and psychological limitations, which must be considered when handling material, is consistent with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Explanation of the training requirements, equipment and tools for handling material in a workplace, is consistent with specified requirements.

    The application of the relevant personal protective equipment, tools and equipment is in accordance with specified requirements.

    The positioning of the human body in relation to the material being handled is in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of manually handling material in accordance with specified requirements is explained in terms of health, safety and production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The manual handling of material is done in a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids conflict.
