PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby-sitters, in-home child-minders working towards a national qualification and/ or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to provide basic health care for babies.

Administer medication to a baby, toddlers and pre-school child. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Hands are washed before administering medication and the selected equipment prepared according to the type of medication to be administered / to administer the medication. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The baby, toddler and pre-school child is placed in the correct position and the reasons for the preferred position given with examples. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The medication is administered according to the selected method and instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Steps are explained that could be implemented should the baby, toddlers and pre-school chills refuse to take the liquid medicine. |

The symptoms of choking are given and suitable actions to stop the choking are explained with example. |
