PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill of recognising hair and scalp disorders and diseases and the effective dealing thereof in the salon environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Literacy, communication and language skills equal to a NQF Level 1 Certificate.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The context of this unit standard covers: Alopecia areata (round bald patches), cicatrical (scarring alopecia), damaged cuticle, fragilitas crinium (split ends), male pattern baldness, monilethrix (beaded hair shaft), pityriases capitis (dandruff), psoriasis, sebaceous cyst, seborrhea (greasy scalp), trichorrexis nodosa (swelling and breaking of shaft), folliculitis (yellow pustules with hair in centre), impetigo (pustules and scabs), pediculosis capitis (head lice), tinea capitis (ringworm), warts, dermatitis, hypertrichosis.

In the context of hairdressing, "disorders" of the hair and scalp means any abnormal condition that may still be treated by the hairdresser.

In the context of hairdressing, "diseases" of the hair and scalp means any abnormal condition, i.e. contagious, infected, swollen, that may NOT be treated by the hairdresser, but must be referred to a medical practitioner.

    The ability to analyse, record the information and make recommendations, demand from the learner the ability to use science and technology effectively and critically, while showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.

    Safety precautions that must be demonstrated for assessment includes:
  • Using clean towels, tools and gloves;
  • Sterilisation and sanitation techniques and procedures.
