PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard are able to receive, advise and consult with clients and analyzing and evaluate scalp and hair condition. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Literacy, numeracy, communication and language skills equal to a NQF Level 1 Certificate.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The typical scope and context of this unit standard is the hairdressing salon/working environment.

Receive new, regular, expected and unexpected clients in the salon or telephonically, establish a relaxed relationship with them, care for all the clients' needs, receive enquiries around appointments and salon services and deal with them according to salon procedures.

The context of this specific outcome includes all types and conditions of hair including virgin, chemically treated and physically damaged hair.

Describing, discussing, explaining and identifying in regard to the skin, hair, scalp and head:
  • The skin and scalp;
  • The layers of the skin and scalp;
  • The epidermis and its structure with reference to the stratum corneum, the stratum lucidum, the stratum granulosum, the stratum aculeatum and the stratum geminativum;
  • The skin and the process of keratinisation;
  • Skin and hair pigment and colour, and variations in skin and hair colour;
  • The dermis with particular reference to the papillary and reticular layers, and the apocrine and eccrine sweat glands;
  • The subcutaneous layer or hypodermis;
  • The hair and how hair grows with particular emphasis on formation of the papilla and the hair bulb;
  • How hair grows and the growth cycle of hair;
  • Recognition and identification of the stages of hair growth including the Anagen I and II stages, the Catagen stage and the Telogen phase, with details of the growth rate of hair and factors that influence hair growth;
  • The composition of hair with reference to the protein structure of hair, hair structure at the protein level, the helix, the matrix, the carbohydrates in the hair and hair moisture;
  • The structure of a hair from the point of view of medulla, cortex and cuticle;
  • Recognition and identification of the hair follicle, and the structure of hair in relation to medulla, cortex and cuticle;
  • The functions of human hair;
  • Why everyone's hair is so different;
  • Physical properties of hair with reference to:

    (i) Texture and density of the hair;
    (ii) Elasticity or Tensile strength of the hair;
    (iii) Porosity or pliability of hair and the porosity table and test;
    (iv) Direction of hair growth
    (v) Reasons for curl and wave
    (vi) Nourishment of the hair with reference to the influence of diet on the hair and the effect of dietary insufficiency;
    (vii) Hair characteristics and ethnic differences between hair types, the characteristics of Afro hair and the unique texture of super curly hair;
    (viii) Pigmentation (colour) of the hair
    (ix) Greying of the hair
  • Hair with reference to its length, its texture and diameter;
  • Factors that influence hair and the hygroscopic quality of hair;
  • Recognition and identification of alopecia as a disorder of the hair;

    ii. Dandruff and its types;
