PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to design a cartographic product.

A qualifying learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:-
  • Display a knowledge and understanding of the different cartographic products and design criteria.
  • Design a map.
  • Evaluate the map. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF Level 5 numeracy and the ability to read a plan, obtain information from a plan and perform CAD will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard.

    1. Characteristics and uses of different map types are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Topographic, orthographic, thematic, weather, geological, road, town planning, cadastral.

    2. Principles associated with designing a map in both hard and soft copy are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Content, visual level, contrast and balance, symbolisation, colour, generalization, layout, typography, lettering, topology (soft copy only).

    3. Principles associated with cartometry are explained.

    1. Methods of evaluating cartographic products are understood and explained with respect to scale, content, intended use, symbolisations and presentation.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
    4. Anyone wishing to become an assessor or provider of learning must provide an affordable assessment / learning service.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
