PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable Plumbers to inspect, maintain and repair hot and cold, soil and waste, and drainage plumbing systems, to detect water leaks, and to trace hidden pipe work. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
1. The inspection, repair and maintenance hot and cold, soil and waste, and drainage plumbing systems, the detection of water leaks, and the tracing of hidden pipe work are according to the following qualitative specifications:
- Part 1: Water Supply installations for Buildings, and - Part 2: Drainage Installations for Buildings 2. Hot and cold water systems include all piping, fittings, valves, etc. 3. Inspections to Drainage systems includes the use of CCTV cameras. 4. Drainage clearing includes the use of plungers, rodding, and worms. 5. Repairs to water supply includes: cutting out, preparing pipe for jointing, and replacing pipe using repair couplings. 6. Repairs include for valves, taps and cocks. 7. Repairs to drain pipes includes the fitting of "Kimberley" repair sockets. 8. Preventative maintenance to valves and terminal pressure fitting includes: understanding operating principles - analyze cause of malfunction; apply manufacturer's maintenance instructions, obtain spares lists and supply. 9. Diagnostics include: diagnostic principles; logical steps; and equipment; the use of pressure gauge to trace pressure drops, blockages, undersized piping, and control valve settings; the use of thermometers to trace electrical control failure, and cross feeds; leak detection principles, equipment, and services. 10. Correction and Upgrading includes: quantifying terminal supply pressure/flow capabilities of present system; understanding the function and limitation/requirements of new retrofit products and apply system design principles; converting/correcting unbalanced hot water installations; and fitting preventative equipment (filters, strainers, softeners, check valves, back flow preventors, and flow controllers). |
