PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable Plumbers to install and maintain soil, wastewater and vent systems. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. The installation, repair and maintenance of hot and cold water systems are according to the following qualitative specifications:
  • SABS 0252: 1994 Water supply and drainage for Buildings:
  • Part 2: Drainage Installations for Buildings
  • SABS 0400: 1990 Code of Practice for the Application of the national Building Regulations, Part P: Drainage

    2. Soil and waste water pipes include: uPVC, galvanised (GMS), cast iron.

    3. Vertical pipes are fitted plumb, horizontal pipes are installed to specified falls.

    4. Pipes include built-in, and suspended pipes and are secured using holder bats.

    5. Fittings include: holder bats, reducers, tees, bends, etc

    6. Waste water fixtures include: sinks, baths, jetted baths (spa baths), bidets, wash-hand basins, showers, wash troughs, salad bowls, grease traps, floor drains, and food waste disposers.

    7. Sanitary fittings include: water closet pans (wall-hung and pedestal), urinals (stall and wall-hung).

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Plumbers. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
