PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to those who work within an education, training and development context and who advise and counsel learners in order to support their learning and development.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Diagnose and make recommendations concerning learner problems in relation to learning and assessment;
  • Counsel learners concerning problems in relation to learning and assessment;
  • Advise learners concerning their learning and development;
  • Maintain records of learner issues and advice and counselling provided; and
  • Evaluate counselling and advisory services. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    General counselling skills.
    Exposure to education, training and development environments and practices. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard deals with giving advise and providing counselling in relation to a range of difficulties and problems experienced by learners, including dealing with barriers to learning, accessing resources, mapping out future learning pathways, effective approaches to learning and skills development, discrimination, the impact of personal circumstance on learning and assessment.

    This Unit Standard excludes psychological counselling, but practitioners may work together with psychologists and other specialists to address learner needs. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Diagnose and make recommendations concerning learner problems in relation to learning and assessment.

    The diagnosis is based on the analysis and interpretation of relevant and comprehensive information pertaining to the learner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The diagnosis is consistent with findings in similar circumstances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The diagnosis is conducted in a sensitive, caring and professional manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The diagnosis facilitates the provision of advice and possible counselling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Recommendations and/or referrals are appropriate to the findings and the learner's context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Information related to the diagnosis is maintained in a secure and accessible manner, using a manageable information management system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accessibility is limited to authorised personnel.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Counsel learners concerning problems in relation to learning and assessment.

    The environment is set up to enable conducive counselling. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A conducive counselling environment refers to:
  • Privacy and confidentiality;
  • Environment is supportive, pleasant, without distractions.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Counselling is based on the needs of the learners as established through the diagnosis and during counselling sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Counselling is conducted with appropriate sensitivity in line with principles of counselling. This includes recognition, understanding and tolerance of diversity of social and cultural customs of learners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Counselling is conducted professionally. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes confidentiality, empathy, acceptance, reliability, non-judgmental.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Counselling facilitates the learner's decision-making through the discussion of options and forming of an action plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Specialists are engaged constructively to assist in counselling and referrals are made to appropriate counselling services where necessary. Referrals are followed up at appropriate intervals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Counselling services may include psychological and career counselling, psychometric testing, financial aid, medical assistance, help with study skills, registration, occupational therapists; social welfare issues; alcoholic anonymous; drug rehabilitation centres; retrenchment counselling; and marriage/family counselling.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Advise learners concerning their learning and development.

    To include advise on how to learn, how to develop skills, how to approach assessment.

    The advice assists learners to obtain access to resources and develop effective learning strategies that will help them succeed in their area of learning.

    A framework is provided that enables learners to identify and compare their own resources and competencies with the resources and competencies they require, and identify further development needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The advice assists learners to make reasoned choices with respect to learning, assessment and future opportunities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Advice is relevant to the learner's needs and offers workable solutions to identified needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The advice is given in a caring, accountable manner, recognising the diverse and holistic needs of learners, and encouraging them to assess and realise their potential. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Maintain records of learner issues and advice and counselling provided.

    Records capture the learner's needs, the essential nature and content of advice and counselling provided and referrals where applicable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Records are sufficient to facilitate the need for future references when engaging learners and to facilitate reviews. Records support the information needs of referred services where applicable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Records meet organisational quality assurance requirements in terms of content, format, distribution and safekeeping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Confidentiality is maintained at all times. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Evaluate counselling and advisory services.

    Evaluation to include self-performance and the learning institution involved.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The evaluation reveals strengths and weaknesses of the support resources and guidance and advice provided. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Learner and stakeholder feedback on guidance and advice is sought and critically analysed against established review criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The evaluation compares the results of counselling and advising with the objectives thereof, and identifies areas for further development. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recommendations promote improvement of the services and help to integrate lessons learned into future guidance and advisory services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The evaluation contributes to ongoing improvement and quality of services. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Assessors for this Unit Standard must be registered with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Providers of learning towards this Unit Standard must be accredited through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures
