PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to plan, cut, joint and join veneers following safe working procedures.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Planning veneers.
  • Cutting veneers.
  • Jointing veneers.
  • Joining veneers. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in numeracy and literacy equivalent to NQF level 2. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to, the National Certificate in Furniture Wood Machining and Cabinet Making, NQF level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following criteria include, but are not limited to:
  • Tools and equipment: veneering saw; veneering knife; straight edge; measuring devices; set square; protractor, measuring devices
  • Veneer cuts: to length; to width; to shape; flame; crown; quarter cut
  • Matching: straight; slip laid; leaf laid; book match; edge veneering
  • Joints: quartered panels; stringed sheets; edged sheets
  • Problems and faults: marks; misalignment; knife cuts

    Veneers are checked and confirmed to be accurately measured, matched and planned to achieve required jointing size

    Veneers are accurately jointed according to specification requirements

    Jointing and veneer problems are identified, reported to the relevant person, rejected and replaced 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools and equipment are used correctly and safely 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Veneers are handled in a manner which does not cause damage

    The operations are performed safely and within the time allocated
