PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can manage the classifying and grading of poles and timber in a wood preservation plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Manage the grading and classifying of debarked poles and timber.
  • Oversee the identification and removal of reject poles and timber for further processing.
  • Manage the recording of the results of the grading and classifying process.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The pole grading and classification area in the wood preservation plant with all the equipment, tools and instruments used there.
  • The personnel responsible for managing and performing this task in this work area.
  • The raw materials handled in this specific work area.
  • The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of items.
  • The work procedures relevant to this work area.
  • The environmental management principles relevant to this work area.
  • The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this work area.
  • The grading and classification principles used in this plant.
  • The marking and recording methods used in this work area.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Manage the grading and classifying of debarked poles and timber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The prescribed management criteria are adhered to facilitate that the poles are correctly classified and graded and meet the required specification for preservation treatment as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate guidance is given in the overseeing of the correct marking of graded and classified poles, resulting in these poles being assembled into the correct diameter and length classes and grades as per specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are in place to verify that the correct application of the prescribed markings to facilitate that the poles undergo the appropriate processing and treatment and that the markings agree with the dimensional and grading classes of poles and timber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that the marking process complies with the prescribed work rate and standards for the process as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Oversee the identification and removal of reject poles and timber for further processing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process of identification and removal of reject poles is overseen and guidance given to facilitate that batches of graded and marked poles and timber comply with the prescribed specifications as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that the process produces batches of graded poles of uniform size and grade as per specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    This process is managed according to work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Manage the recording of the results of the grading and classifying process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that the management of the recording of the data is performed as prescribed, resulting in accurate records for management to keep track of material going through the treating process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that the records are accurate and complete, i.e. containing all the required information regarding stock passing through the treating process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that this task is completed within the prescribed standards for accuracy/correctness and work rate as detailed in the work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.
  • Competency in managing the grading and classification of poles and the recording of these results, equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.
  • Workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to NQF Level 3 activities in the wood preservation plant.
