PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is for people who can put the match composition on the splints for the formation of match sticks, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

Assemble and start the Compo table

Maintain the process specification

Shut down and dismantle the machine

Prepare and clean the Compo table

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

Competency in communication skills and science equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an NQF Level 2;

An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;

Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

a) The scope of the Unit Standard covers:

i) The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
ii) All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
iii) All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
iv) All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
v) All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

b) The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 3 in the activity of match manufacturing.

c) The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Assemble and start the Compo table.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The Foreman is called to inspect the Compo table components before reassembling the table to ensure there is no dried Compo in the components.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The Compo table components are assembled as per work instructions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The compo table is assembled as per work instructions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Water temperature of the table is checked to reach between 45 and 55 degrees Celsius and compo is added on the Compo table.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

Water sprays are adjusted to clean the edges of the Compo belt.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

Bar machine glue temperature, (165 - 175 degrees Celsius), results are reported to the bar machine operator and recorded on the process control sheet at 60 minutes intervals.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7

Compo table, transfer pipes and fittings are cleaned daily on morning shift.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The following checks take place at 60 minute intervals and recorded on process sheet

ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES

Hot plate temperatures, (130 degrees Celsius plus), are checked and recorded on the process control sheet at 60 minutes intervals.

Wax temperatures, (118 - 125 degrees Celsius), are checked and recorded on the process control sheet at 60 minutes intervals.

Wax depth is checked and recorded on the process control sheet at 60 minutes intervals.

(Pine 6 - 8mm and Poplar 3 - 6mm) - Wax Depth.

2.4 Compo temperatures (38 - 41 degrees Celsius), SG's (1.25 - 1.35g/cc), and Viscosities (45 - 55 sec), are checked and recorded on the process control sheet at 60 minutes intervals.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Six (6) matches are selected and checked every hour by igniting them to see that they burn properly and checked for wax dip/application.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Head sizes (4.25 - 5.25mm), and shapes (against comparative samples), are checked every 15 minutes and results are recorded on the match heads process control sheet.

Splint feeder is cleaned when there is low match count.

Dried Compo is cleaned around the Compo table.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

Out of spec results are adjusted and / or reported to the supervisor.

Compo side storage pot is drained as per work instructions.

Compo is added by bucket to transfer pot when there is a shortage during the last minutes of the run.

VPO machine is stopped and the Compo removed from the table.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Compo pump is run out until all the Compo in the transfer pipes and levelling pot is drained as per work instructions.

Compo pump is stopped and the transfer pot is removed as per work instructions.

Mono pump is switched off as per work instructions.

Transfer pipes and levelling pot are dismantled as per work instructions.

Compo table runners are fitted and the Compo table is slid out for cleaning as per work instructions.

The Compo dipper, inspector, supervisor, VPO take off and bar machine operator all assist in cleaning of the Compo table.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.

Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA

Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA

Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA

Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable

The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
