  • Prepare for log scaling.
  • Scale tree lengths into saw and veneer logs to meet specifications.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Demonstration of competence will take place "on-the-job" in a production situation.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in scaling tree lengths into saw and veneer logs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Implications of unplanned scaling and lack of controls during scaling are explained in terms of cost, safety, operational efficiency and wastage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The role of the scaler as part of a team is explained in terms of complying with safety standards and to optimise production.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Factors influencing scaling productivity are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Effects of over and under production in scaling are described.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Effects on subsequent operations, quality, teamwork, safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Defects in tree and wood quality are explained in terms of the influence on the selection of products to be recovered from the tree.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Effects of inaccurate measuring and measuring equipment are explained in terms of value recovery.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Prepare for scaling.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Self, other workers, equipment, operational plan, general work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Safety requirements applicable to the operation are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
All personal protective equipment required, is check for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Equipment is checked for suitability, serviceability and calibration, and corrective action is taken, if required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Operational requirements for the scaling operation are explained.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Specifications of products to be scaled, production target, where scaling will take place, timber flow.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
General work area is check for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Scale tree lengths into saw and veneer logs to meet specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Tree lengths are scaled into saw and veneer logs using effective techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Tree lengths are marked in terms of company policy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Tree lengths are scaled to ensure optimal usage and value recovery in terms of the specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Scaling is performed to meet operational requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Specifications are met, scaling complements other phases of the operation, work-rate meets pre-determined production target, scaling location.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Standard operating procedures and safe work practices are adhered to throughout the operation.
