PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who intend to do rigging in cable yarding operations.

People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of wire ropes used in cable yarding operations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of rigging accessories.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anchor systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rigging of intermediate. supports, tailtrees and a tower for a cable yarding operation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of wire ropes used in cable yarding operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component parts of wire rope are identified according to the Handbook section 4.1. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics of wire rope are explained according to the Handbook section 4.1.1. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Diameter, lay, core, configuration of strands and wires.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Wire rope limits are explained according to the Handbook section 4.1.2.1, 4.1.2.2 and 4.1.2.3. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Table 3 of the Handbook or any other recognised table is used to determine the safe working load of wire rope.

    Safety considerations for wire rope are stated according to the Handbook section 4.1.3.

    The attachment of cable clamps to wire ropes are demonstrated according to the Handbook section 5.1.

    Correct application, number and spacing.

    Rig a shackle with the pin through the eye according to the Handbook section 5.5. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A molly is made according to the Handbook section 5.6.

    Hang a block from a strap according to the Handbook section 5.8.2.

    Table 7 of the Handbook is used to determine the efficiency of wire ropes bending over a sheave.
