PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The person credited with this Unit Standard will understand the planning and designing of livestock and game pen layouts. The learner will be able to design fencing areas, access ways, yards and handling facilities and plan water supplies and shelter according to livestock and game requirements.

Planning water supply according to livestock and game requirements

It is assumed that Learners accessing this Unit Standards are competent in:

Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

Activities will include finishing, breeding, velveting.

Land assessments will include contour, soil type, location, topography, existing shelter, soil fertility and climate.

Disease and parasites will include, but are not limited to, leptospirosis, ticks, facial eczema.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Assess the land for suitability for livestock and game farming activity.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Land is assessed to determine whether its physical features suit a specific livestock or game farming activity.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The presence of diseases or parasites relevant to proposed farming activity is monitored to assist with determining preventative measures.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

Design livestock and game fencing and access ways.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Fencing and access ways are designed so that they are appropriate to species, hold stock safely, and facilitate movement, with least likelihood of injury to livestock and game.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Gates and gateways are designed to meet Farm Programme standards.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3

Plan water supply according to livestock and game requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Regional Council regulations are met in water supply plan.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Water supply placement and construction, and availability of water supply meet Farm Programme standards.

Design yards and handling facilities.

Yards and handling facilities are designed allow transport access in all weather conditions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Yards and handling facilities are designed to allow ease of sorting, handling and separation of stock without compromising welfare of livestock and game.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Ramps and holding yards are designed and constructed in accordance with Farm Programme standards.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Yard and handling facilities design is appropriate to species, and ensure operator safety.

Plan shelter.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Shelters are designed so as to assist management and settling of livestock and game.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Provision of shelters is in accordance with Farm Programme standards.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be obtained from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body, through summative and formative assessment by a registered assessor.

Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
