PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to perform corrective preventative maintenance on an electrical railway signal according to prescribed corrective tasks, by applying signalling engineering practice. The learner will also be able to identify, prioritise and report any potential failure maintenance tasks. This will ensure the availability of functional electrical railway signals as required, which contribute in part to a reliable railway signalling system, safe and efficient train operations and effective rail transportation. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
The credit value assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because performance must be carried out:
1. In a controlled environment. 2. Within a specific time. 3. At a field site (might or might not include overhead traction equipment). 4. Under simulated or actual operational conditions. When overhead traction equipment is present, the learner must have a valid certificate related to high-voltage equipment, which certifies the learner to work under specific conditions and within a specified area. This standard includes CPM on the following electrical railway signals, e.g: This standard excludes: |

UNIT STANDARD NOTES |
Assessment process:
1. Assessment methods: These methods must be selected carefully based on the purpose of the assessment (for example, the written method could be used to assess knowledge or on-the-job demonstration for practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods (no less than three of those detailed above) in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes. 2. The following may be used to supplement the above minimum assessment methods: Valid, reliable and authentic evidence (presented as a portfolio of evidence) from past achievements and experience may serve to supplement the assessment of applied competence. The portfolio should include inter alia: Values: In addition, the following values should be demonstrated: Supplementary information: Terminology Job order refers to: Diagram refers to a drawing or plan. Sub-standard refers to the deviation from specifications and/or standards. Site refers to field location. Communication can include, but is not limited to: Communication media can include, but is not limited to: Logbook refers to evidence of training and job performance. Lifting equipment refers to block & tackle and rope. Overhead traction equipment (OHTE) refers to the high-voltage equipment used to power electric locomotives. Operational changes refer to changes in circumstances under which the work is performed. Re-instatement refers to the certification that the equipment is restored back to its original operational state according to specifications. Certification The learner will be certified as competent when fundamental CPM was successfully performed on at least one from each of the following categories of electrical railway signals: Note: Proof of competence must include an on-site assessment of CPM task execution under operational conditions. Credits Total hours required by the learner to achieve the required outcomes: Activity - Hours Theory - 16 Practical - 22 Self directed learning - 6 On-the-job learning - 4 Assessment - 6 Total - 54 Credits achieved: 5 |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
