PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to interpret and apply the key doctrines of the Christian faith contextually.
Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe key Christian concepts in a specific socio-cultural context
  • Show how Christian belief may be contextualised
  • Show how Christian practice may be inculturated

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • The broad range of doctrines accepted by the Christian Church generally and historically, as well as specifically and contextually
  • 'The Church' as local congregations, denominations and as a world body
  • The personal and devotional life of the Christian believer
  • The communitarian life of the Christian believer
  • 'The world' as local communities, national entities and the whole world at large.
  • African context in two senses: the local context of the learner, and the continental experience

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe key Christian concepts in a specific socio-cultural context. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Concepts includes doctrines but also theological issues e.g. relation between scripture and tradition, or the place of healing in the church. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Links between the formal expressions of the concepts are described with reference to ways in which they are embodied in the specific context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    the link between a denominational position on the inspiration of scripture and ways in which scripture has been used wrongly to justify apartheid; or between the doctrine of creation and the issue of land rights.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ways in which the context impacts on the church's understanding and use of particular concepts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The way in which the church understands the doctrine of salvation in a context of poverty.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Show how Christian belief may be contextualised.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Evidence is given of redefinition of the selected concepts through use of cultural symbols, markers or practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least two concepts e.g. doctrine of the Church, issue of women's ministry.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A demonstration is given of how the redefined concepts may be applied in context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Same as for 2.1 e.g. liberative transformation of church structures; the development of women's ministry as a human rights issue
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Show how Christian practice may be inculturated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Evidence is given of reconstruction of the selected practices through use of cultural symbols, markers or practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least two practices, which must be different from the concepts selected in 2.1 e.g. Eucharistic practice; burial of the dead.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A practical demonstration is given of how the reconstructed practices may be used in a local church or community. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    One of the two practices.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration must be reported back accurately and critiqued.
