PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic competence in the collection, presentation and transmission of the oral and written history of a local congregation, and who wish to locate that story within the wider history of their denomination.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Present a chronological account of the origins and growth of a local congregation
  • Locate this history within the broader history of the related denomination
  • Link both congregational and denominational accounts with the broad history of Christianity in Southern Africa 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard should include:
  • One congregation only
  • The learner's own place in and relation to the congregational story
  • The congregational story is linked to the development of the relevant denomination
  • All of this is placed in the wider story of Christianity in South Africa

    Present a brief chronological account of the origins and growth of your local congregation.

    A variety of creative presentation methods could be included, i.e. journals or diaries, posters, timelines, videos, dramatisation, musical presentations.

    The history of individuals' denominations is outlined with references to place of origin, leading figures, time and events leading to its establishment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The history of individuals' denominations is outlined with reference to turning points in the history of the denomination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The establishment of individuals' denomination in the Southern African region is outlined taking into account the major events and turning points in the history of the organisation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The account is located in the wider historical, geographical and cultural context of Southern African Christianity. The outline is presented coherently as an interconnected series of historical events.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Place the outline of your denomination's history within the broad history of the growth of Christianity in the Southern African region. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Use should be made of the summary learnings from the Unit Standard "Outline the development of Christianity in Southern Africa".
