PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to learners who wish to understand and articulate their faith more effectively through the study of key Christian doctrines.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe the purpose of Christian doctrine
  • Describe sources of Christian doctrine and how they are used
  • Explain the basic skills needed to engage with Christian doctrine, and
  • List and describe key teachings of the Christian Church and explain their significance

    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • The broad range of doctrines accepted by the Christian Church generally and historically
  • The elementary purposes and sources of Christian doctrine, and
  • The essential skills needed to understand and express Christian doctrine

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the purpose of Christian doctrine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic aims of Christian doctrine are identified and described from personal experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aims may include but are not limited to:

    Giving coherent expression to the Christian faith, helping people give meaning to their life experiences, giving believers a sense of belonging and solidarity with the whole Christian Church, enhancing a sense of continuity with believers throughout the history of the Church.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The description is illustrated by examples of Christian doctrine achieving its aims. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least three examples are given.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The achievement of the aims of Christian doctrine are described by giving at least three examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe sources of Christian doctrine and how they are used. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Sources must include the Bible and the Church's tradition. Other sources may include: reason, experience, denominational emphases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The way sources of Christian doctrine relate to each other is described by means of reason, experience and denominational emphasis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The contribution to Christian doctrine of each selected source is identified and described from the contents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The contribution of each selected source to one selected Christian doctrine is explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Three examples from each source. Examples of Christian doctrines may include any aspect of the Nicene Creed, or other statements of faith, such as the Apostles' Creed.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the basic skills required to understand and articulate Christian doctrine. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Skills must include but are not limited to:
  • Relating specific doctrines to life experiences and situations
  • Showing how particular doctrines relate to the unity of Christian belief using elementary reasoning

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic skills which ensure the achievement of the purposes of Christian doctrine are explained with reference to real life situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Links between the skills and the use of sources of Christian doctrine are identified and explained by using reasoning and relating them to the unity of Christian belief. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    List and describe key Christian doctrines and explain their significance. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The doctrines should include teachings on God, creation, anthropology, sin, salvation, trinitology, christology, pneumatology, ecclesiology, death and eschatology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The essential elements of the historical Christian faith are described with reference to a creedal statement such as the Nicene Creed or the Apostles' Creed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The significance of key Christian doctrines are explained according to their manifestation in the Church's traditions.

    Doctrine, in this unit standard, refers to a disciplined study of Christian understandings of God, humanity and the Christian faith in the context of history and the world. Other terms are defined as follows:
  • Creation - the Christian understanding that the world was created by God
  • Angelology - the Christian understanding of created bodiless spiritual powers, including angels, fallen angels and demons
  • Anthropology - the Christian understanding of human nature
  • Sin - the Christian understanding of the way in which evil operates in the world through human beings
  • Salvation - the Christian understanding of the way in which God acts to overcome evil in the world
  • Trinitology - the Christian understanding the nature of God as three persons in one essence
  • Christology - the Christian understanding of the nature and person of Jesus Christ (who he is, and what he is)
  • Pneumatology - the Christian understanding of the nature and work of the Holy Spirit
  • Ecclesiology - the Christian understanding of the nature and role of the Church (the Christian community)
