PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to understand the contents and intention of the New Testament letters, and to use basic methods of biblical interpretation to apply the teachings of those letters to situations today in the Church, the learner's community and the world.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe the situations that gave rise to a selection of the letters of the New Testament.
  • Summarise and evaluate the arguments and theological responses of the letter writers.
  • Apply the arguments and theological principles to issues which the learner has identified within today's Church, the learner's own community and the world.

    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NF Level 3.

    Historical, political and social factors that influence events are explained with reference to at least five of the New Testament letters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Biblical texts are explained with reference to relevant passages. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Links between the context and the text of the selected letters are made by identifying similarities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Summarise the content and major themes of the New Testament letters.

    The main parts of the given text without distortion or loss of essential meaning are described through summaries.

    Biblical texts which are relevant to the issues chosen are correctly identified and their significance explained.

    The application of the biblical texts to the issues chosen is explained according to recognised models of biblical hermeneutics.

    Choice to be made from specified hermeneutic methods including textual and historical methods.

    The context of the contemporary readers is described in context.
