PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
  • Identify and state the typical applications of belt drives, couplings, gearboxes and bearings used on air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation plants,
    Recognize and state the consequences of mismatched belts and pulleys, misaligned belt drives and couplings.
  • State the lubricating requirements of bearings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Identify components of air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation plants and where belt drives, couplings, gearboxes and bearings are used in these. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Typical applications are for fans, pumps and refrigeration compressors.

    Gearboxes:
    Gearboxes for increasing or decreasing rotational speed.

    Couplings:
    Tyre couplings, disc couplings, belt and coupling guards,

    Belts
    V-belts, wedge or special profile (S.P.) belts, V-pulleys, S.P. pulleys, adjustable pitch pulleys, belt sizes, matched sets of belts.

    Bearings:
    Ball bearings, roller bearings, journal bearings, flange bearings, self-aligning bearings, plummer blocks, pillow blocks and bronze bushes.

    Bearing lubrication systems:
    Sealed, greased and oiled bearings.
