PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard will be useful to learners who wish to find solutions to some of the problems that can be found in the Church and the world today in the light of New Testament teaching.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:

Demonstrate awareness of some of the situations that gave rise to the letters of the New Testament

Summarise the content of a selection of New Testament letters

Identify issues in the church and world today to which the content of some of the New Testament letters may be applicable and explain the relevance of their teaching

Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 1.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Describe some of the situations that gave rise to the letters of the New Testament.

OUTCOME RANGE

Situations may include false teaching, immorality, poverty and wealth, divisions in the church, the role of women, persecution, faith and works, division in the church. At least four such situations are described and the associated letters are named.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The situations that gave rise to the letters of the New Testament are identified and discussed according to the Letters that contain information on them.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The identified situations are described in relation to the actual historical, economic, cultural and social conditions of the period.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Links are made between the situations and the books which are named to indicate how they influenced each other.
