PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who use proper nouns and introduce unfamiliar vocabulary, while adhering to the rules governing communication behaviour and social interaction within the Deaf community.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate production of fingerspelling in different contexts, and
  • Demonstrate reception of fingerspelling in different contexts. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following is assumed to be in place before learners start learning towards this unit standard:
  • Basic use of target language.
  • The ability to ask questions and give introductions in SASL. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    1. Deaf is capitalised when it refers to the Deaf community and Deaf culture, as opposed to deaf in lower case, which relates to audio logical hearing loss.

    2. Deaf culture is defined globally as 'a way of life, a shared perspective, based on knowing the world primarily through vision' and includes the rules governing communication behaviour and social interaction within the Deaf community e.g. eye contact is maintained to allow conversation to proceed.

    3. The rules of SASL refer to those accepted by the South African Deaf community, for use in South Africa, and may include any or all of the following: grammatical, visual, social and cultural elements.

    4. Proper nouns, referred to in this unit standard, are the names of people, places, brand names, road names and addresses, usually written with a capital first letter. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate production of fingerspelling for different purposes. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Purposes include communicating proper nouns, introducing unfamiliar vocabulary, eliciting understanding of unfamiliar vocabulary, and communicating where the sign is unknown or does not exist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Situations are identified in which fingerspelling is appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The formation of handshapes is consistent with the rules of SASL. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Palm-orientation is consistent with the rules of SASL. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rhythm, fluidity and pace is consistent with the rules of SASL. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The use of space and movement and eye gaze is consistent with the rules of SASL. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate reception of fingerspelling in different communicative contexts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Reception to take place within a discourse i.e. not limited to the reception of isolated vocabulary

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reception is consistent with the given message. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reception is at an acceptable rate and facilitates effective communication as used by the Deaf community. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.

    The assessor will be registered with the appropriate ETQA and will be qualified in this learning area.

    The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification. All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias. Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
