PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be capable of effective and appropriate supervision and caring of service dogs in a kenneled environment.

Benefit for society of this unit standard is that the person who completes this will contribute to safety in society.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Ensure that the daily routine maintenance on the kennels is executed.
  • Complete records with regards to the maintenance of service dogs.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of a service dog. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills, attitude and/or equivalent:
  • A knowledge, comprehension and application of language and mathematical skills at NQF level 02.
  • Caring for the welfare of a service dog at NQF 02. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is applicable to persons that as part of their duties are required to ensure effective and appropriate supervision and care of service dogs in a kenneled environment. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Ensure that the daily routine maintenance on the kennels is executed. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Kennels must include:
  • Dogs living quarters, immediate vicinity, training area, etc.

    Cleaned must include:
  • Hygienically washed out with water and detergents.

    Repair must include:
  • Sharp objects, wire, broken boards, jagged ends are suitably covered and/or repaired, gates in working condition. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Supervisor ensures that the kennel and sleeping area is cleaned according to statutory regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Supervisor ensures that the kennels are in a good state of repair to ensure the safety of other dogs and persons. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Supervisor ensures that dogs that are sick or injured receive the necessary treatment within reasonable time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Supervisor ensures that the correct dog is in kennel for administration, safety and utilization purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Supervisor ensures that the cleaning and handling equipment is utilized correctly. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Complete records with regards to the maintenance of service dogs. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Past history must include:
  • Previous owner, identification, medical history.

    Identification must include:
  • Breed, Date of birth, gender, registration number, tattoo or micro-chip, number, breed records.

    Records must include:
  • Medical records, consumables, vaccination details, dip recording sheet, performance/ progress report, training qualifications, ability of dog.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Supervisor ensures that the past history of all dogs are recorded correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Supervisor ensures that the correct administrative and reporting procedures are adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Supervisor ensures all records in file are up to date and correctly stored. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Supervisor ensures control over supplies and equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Ensure proper maintenance of a service dog. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Routine care must include:
  • Grooming, dipping, daily exercise.

    Correct diet must include:
  • A diet that is balanced for application to the dogs in quantities necessary for their optimum performance.

    Veterinary treatment must include:
  • Medicines prescribed for a specific dog. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Supervisor ensures that the daily maintenance for the dog is performed to ensure the dog's mental and physical well-being. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Supervisor ensures that the dog is fed a correct diet in the correct/prescribed quantities to ensure optimal performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Supervisor ensures correct veterinary treatment is given where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Supervisor ensures that where needed advised or prescribed medication is administered and recorded to ensure recovery from the condition. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the POSLEC ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the POSLEC SETA ETQA/ and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
