PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be capable of taking proper care of a service dog in order to ensure it's welfare.
This is the entry level unit standard required by all personnel working with service dogs.
Benefit for society of this unit standard is that the person who completes this will contribute to safety in society.

A person accredited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Ensure that the basic needs of the service dog are catered for.
  • Conduct safety precautions with the service dog in order to prevent accidents.
  • Transport service dogs in a safe and secure manner.
  • Inspect the condition of the service dog. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills, attitude and/or equivalent:
  • A knowledge, comprehension and application of language and mathematical skills at NQF level 01. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is for the induction of persons caring for the welfare of service dogs. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Ensure that the basic needs of the Service Dog are catered for. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Service Dog must include:
  • Any type of dog tasked to assist a handler or handicapped person in the performance of his or her duties.

    Accommodation must include:
  • Kennel and immediate living environment.

    Environmental Conditions must include:
  • Weather conditions.

    Statutory Provisions must include:
  • Occupational Health and safety Act 85/1993 Section 14, Performing Animals Act 24 of 1935, Health and safety Act 63 of 1977
    Other relevant legislation and regulations specific to site

    Reports must include:
  • Verbal or written.

    According To It's Needs must include:
  • Breed, age of dog, energy levels required, environmental conditions 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Accommodation of the service dog is inspected for suitability with regard to the breed of dog and prevailing environmental conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Kennel and sleeping area are hygienically cleaned according to statutory provisions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Abnormalities found in the kennel are reported and where necessary appropriate action is taken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. A nutritious and balanced diet, as recommended by a dietician, is fed to ensure the dog's mental and physical well-being. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Clean, fresh water is available for the service dog at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. The dog is regularly exercised to maintain physical condition and well-being. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Irregularities in the service dogs feeding habits are reported upon detection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    8. Equipment for the handling and training of service dogs is identified, examined for flaws, stored and utilized correctly. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct safety precautions with regards to the service dog in order to prevent accidents. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Incidents must include:
  • Dog bites, accidents, injuries caused or associated to the presence of the service dog.

    Free Exercise must include:
  • Dog is released from restraints for exercise and to relieve itself.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Kennelling procedures ensure the prevention of accidents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Appropriate distances are maintained between other people and dogs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Incidents involving service dogs are reported according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Escapes of service dogs are reported immediately to the supervisor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Free exercise is given to the dog in a safe and secure area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Handling methods are carried out humanely on a continuous basis to maintain and improve the dog's standard. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Transport service dogs in a safe and secure manner. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Appropriate vehicle, kennel or dog trailer must include:
  • Roadworthiness, Size - Big enough for the dog to stand, lay down, turn around, insulation against the elements, secure locking mechanisms. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Service dog is transported in an appropriate vehicle, kennel or dog trailer according to statutory provisions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Service dog is removed from its vehicle, kennel or dog trailer in a safe and controlled manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Correct procedures are adhered to, when assisting the dog to enter and exit the vehicle, kennel or dog trailer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Vehicle is driven in a manner which gives due consideration for the safety and welfare of the service dog whilst being transported. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Inspect the condition of the service dog on a continuous basis. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    External Parasites must include:
  • Ticks, fleas, etc.

    Signs must include:
  • Deviations from the norm during physical examination of the dog and observation of behavioural pattern.

    Sensory Organs must include:
  • Eyes, ears, mouth, etc.

    Physical Condition must include:
  • Injury, energy level, fitness, etc.

    Reacted Upon must include:
  • First Aid for dogs, reporting procedures. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. External parasites found on the service dog are reported and where necessary, appropriate action is taken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Signs of the most common diseases and conditions caused by parasites found on dogs are reported upon identification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Signs of the most common infectious diseases in dogs are reported upon identification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Grooming of the service dog is done in the proper manner in which any irregularities found on the skin or coat are identified and the appropriate action is taken within reasonable time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The sensory organs of the service dog are inspected and deviations from the norm are reported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. The behaviour, eating habits and overall physical condition of the service dog are inspected and observed for irregularities out of the norm. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Symptoms of fatigue and overwork are identified and reacted upon according to procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the POSLEC ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the POSLEC SETA ETQA/ and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
