PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is intended for use by small fishing vessel operators who have limited competence in the operation and control of small craft. It will be useful to people whom wish to follow a career path within the small, medium and micro fishing industry.

Navigate and manoeuvre small fishing vessels. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The vessel is manoeuvred in accordance with SAMSA regulations and local port and coastal rules, and in a manner which maintains the safety of the craft and its crew. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The planned voyage is consistent with the craft's capability in terms of local general safety certificates. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Position is determined by range and true bearings, or direction from a recognized feature. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Equipment required to support a safe voyage is selected and used in accordance with its designed function and manufacturer's operating instructions ito SAMSA regulations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Information gathered from available sources is interpreted correctly and is sufficient for safe operation during the planned voyage. |
