PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to provide a complete hair perming service. This will include the preparation of both the workstation and client for the hair perming service. They will be able to investigate and examine the hair in preparation of the permanent waving and choose the correct tools, equipment and products suitable for the client's hair and to carry out the full hair perming procedure for best results. The learner will also be able to conduct a full after sale service for the client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing client for a workstation hair perming service.
  • Analysing the hair and scalp and selecting appropriate tools, equipment and products.
  • Preparing hair for perming service.
  • Performing perming application techniques.
  • Rinsing and finishing off hair.
  • Discussing, explaining and applying the use of aftercare products and services. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against the unit standards Mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Professional manner will include aspects such as ethical standards, commitment to service, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, tone of voice, posture and personal appearance.
  • Perming rod diameter will include the different size and shape rods.
  • Winding techniques will include brick, on-base, over-directed, under-directed, spiral, weave, stack winding, perming, textured and combination winding.
  • Different types of perm lotion will include normal, resistant, coloured, lightened, treated, acid, alkaline, gel and 3 step perm.

    The workstation is prepared for a permanent wave service.

    The client is consulted with in a professional manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Superfluous jewellery and clothing is removed according to salon procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Removed items are placed in safekeeping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The client is gowned and protected in readiness for a hair perming service according to salon procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse the hair and scalp and select appropriate tools, equipment and products.

    The clients hair and scalp is analysed through questioning and physical examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information and recommendations regarding the perming service are captured on the client record card and the release form is completed in full. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appropriate tools, equipment and products are selected based on the results of the analysis of the hair and scalp.

    The correct permanent wave product and strength, rod size and winding / blocking techniques are selected according to the analysis results.

    The methods and techniques for performing a perming service is chosen.

    The hair is shampooed according to manufacturers instructions prior to perming service.

    A barrier cream is applied according to manufacturers instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Porosity equalizer is applied if necessary according to manufacturers instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The hair is parted and sub-sectioned according to perming service requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform perming application techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The chosen methods and techniques for the perming service are performed and the eyes, ears and neck are protected using suitable barrier products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The hair is sectioned according to rod width and diameter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The end papers are applied correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The hair is evenly distributed across the rod and correct tension is applied and the perming rods are secured according to salon procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The permanent wave product is applied to every rod in a controlled manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The curl development is monitored, timed and a test curl is taken according to manufacturers instructions.

    The hair is thoroughly rinsed to remove lotion and excess water is removed.

    The neutralizer is applied, monitored and rinsed according to manufacturers instructions.

    The perm rods are removed according to salon procedures and manufacturers instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair is rinsed and the appropriate product is applied to finish off the perming procedure.
