PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate the preparation and cutting of hair using professional scissors prepare hairdressing equipment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing of workstation for haircutting according organisational requirements.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of hair cutting.
  • Cutting hair using scissor over comb techniques.
  • Cutting hair using clipper technique.
  • Cutting hair using razor cutting techniques.
  • Completing haircutting process.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners assessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

  • Haircut shapes: solid form, graduated form, uniform layer, and increased layer.
  • Haircut techniques: blunt, thinning, texturising.
  • Hair analysis: porosity, elasticity, texture, density, length, scalp conditions, growth patterns.
  • Tools: scissors, thinning scissors, clippers, combs, sectioning clips.
  • Home care advice: product types, hair maintenance.
  • Cleaning and tidying: work areas, shampoo area, styling station.

    Prepare the work station for a haircutting service according to organizational requirements.

    The workstation is prepared for an advanced haircutting services with the applicable tools, products and materials.

    The record keeping documents are selected and made available.

    Safety and hygienic practices are followed and adhered to throughout the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of hair cutting.

    Haircuts are identified and described in terms of the hair structure and design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The haircuts are described in terms of their shapes and surface texture. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different techniques of hair cutting are described in terms of their effects on the finished design. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Cut hair using scissor over comb technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The scissor over comb technique is explained and demonstrated using practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The position range of the client head is maintained throughout the scissor over comb procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The angle of the comb is held at 45 degrees for cutting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A continuous movement of scissor and comb is applied to cut the hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The remainder of the hair is blended with the scissor over comb cut. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Cut hair using clipper technique.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The clipper technique is explained and demonstrated using practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate clipper guard is selected and attached to the clipper. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The position of the client's head is maintained throughout the clipper procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A continuous movement of clipper is applied to cut the hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The remainder of the hair is blended with the clipper cut. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Cut hair using razor cutting technique.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The razor cutting technique is explained and demonstrated using practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate razor is selected for cutting hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The position (range) of the clients head is maintained throughout the razor cutting procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A continuous movement of the razor is applied to cut the hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The remainder of the hair is blended with the razor cut.

    Complete haircutting process.

    All hair cuttings and protective clothing is removed from client.

    The client advised on homecare products and treatments according to hair type and completed service.

    Record card is completed and follow up appointment is made and confirmed.

    Used tools and equipment are sanitized according to salon requirements.

    Work area is cleaned and tidied up according to salon requirements.

    Client confirms satisfaction with desired cut.
