PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for a paraffin foot, hand treatment, and prepare their client for the treatment. Learners are also able to perform paraffin hand and foot treatment.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Prepare the workstation for a paraffin hand/foot treatment according to organisational procedures. |

The appropriate paraffin wax heater is selected and replenished and temperature control is set. |

The nail and surrounding skin is cleansed with appropriate products and tools and left free of any nail varnish. |

The hands/feet are soaked in a sanitising solution to meet the treatment plan. |

The hands, lower arms/lower legs, feet are exfoliated and dried according to organisational requirements. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
A relaxing massage is conducted in a continuous manner on the hands and forearms with an appropriate medium utilising effleurage, petrissage and/or friction movements to suit the client's needs. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The temperature of the wax is tested and a safe comfortable working temperature is maintained and the wax layers are applied suitably, covered and allowed to set. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The wax is peeled off and product residue is removed with appropriate products and tools. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The client is advised of homecare treatment and products to maintain service. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The follow up appointment is secured and the client record card is completed in accordance with organisational procedures. |

Sales opportunities are identified throughout the treatment and products recommended that are suitable with the clients needs. |
