PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for a pedicure and prepare their clients feet for the treatment. Learners are also able to perform the pedicure, buffing of the nails and apply the nail varnish.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation for a pedicure according to organisation requirements.
  • Preparing the client for a pedicure treatment.
  • Managing and performing a pedicure.
  • Managing and performing application of nail varnish. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The client should be seated or reclined.
  • Hygienic procedures are to be followed: personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools and work area.
  • Appropriate tools for a pedicure could include nail scissors, nail clippers cuticle nippers, orange stick, emery boards, hoof sticks, buffers, foot files and foot rasp.

    Prepare the workstation for a pedicure according to organisational requirements.

    The service to be performed is determined verbally by questioning the client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The workstation for a pedicure is prepared with the applicable tools, products and materials.

    The record keeping documents are selected and made available for completion according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The workstation meets the required levels of hygiene and sanitation according to organisational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare client for a pedicure treatment.

    The client is received according to organisational requirements.

    The client's nail and skin is assessed and recommendations are captured on client record card.

    Nail and surrounding skin is cleansed and make free of nay varnish with appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The feet are soaked in a sanitising solution and an exfoliate is selected and applied to the feet and lower leg. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Rough skin is smoothed and softened with appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The cuticles are softened and pushed back with minimum discomfort to the client using appropriate product and tools.

    Manage and perform a pedicure.

    The natural nail is cut and shaped to counteract ingrown toenails. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The product residue is removed with appropriate products and tools.

    The nail is buffed with appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A relaxing massage is conducted in a continuous manner on the foot and lower leg with an appropriate medium utilizing effleurage, petrissage and or friction movements to suit the client's needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Record card is completed and client advised on homecare treatments, retail products and time schedule for follow up appointment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Safety and hygienic practices are followed and adhered to throughout the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Manage and perform application of nail varnish.

    The chosen colour varnish is applied to the nail plate in an even manner.

    Sales opportunities for further treatment and products and suitable homecare advice and support are identified and recommended that are suitable with the clients needs.
