PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to ensure the correct preparation for both the client and workstation for the application of hair extensions. They will also be able to carry out manual hair extension using both the weaving or glue technique and a mechanical hair extension. The learners will also be able to carry out and recommend after care product and services to the client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing client and workstation for hair extension services.
  • Performing and manual hair extension using the weaving technique.
  • Performing a manual hair extension using the glue technique.
  • Performing a mechanical hair extension procedure.
  • Discussing, explaining and applying the use of after care products and services. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The hair extension procedure will include doing the whole head.
  • Hair extension products will include shampoo, mouse, setting and styling lotions, moulding gels, finishing hair sprays.
  • Hair pieces will include 100% artificial hair, mono fibre hair, all other synthetic hair.
  • Hair extension techniques will include weaving, braiding and highlighting.

    The method for applying hair extensions using the weaving technique is explained and demonstrated using practical examples.

    Safety precautions for weaving on a hair extension are explained according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Client's hair is prepared and sectioned for the manual hair extension. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair is platted and hair extension is weaved on and the client is consulted during the hair extension procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The hair extension styled according to the client's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The manual weaving hair extensions procedure is performed within the agreed time and safety and client comfort is adhered to throughout the services. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform a manual hair extension using the glue technique.

    The method for performing a manual hair extension using the glue technique is explained and demonstrated using practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety precautions for applying a manual glue hair extension are explained according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Client's hair is prepared and sectioned for the manual glue hair extension. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair pieces are measured and cut according to client's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Glue is applied to the hair piece and attached to the client's hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hair extension and styled according to the client's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The manual glue hair extension procedure is performed within the required time frame and safety and client comfort is adhered to throughout the services.

    Perform a mechanical hair extension procedure.

    The method for performing a mechanical hair extension is explained and demonstrated using practical examples.

    Safety precautions for performing a mechanical hair extension are explained according to organisational procedures.

    Client's hair is prepared and sectioned for the mechanical hair extension. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair pieces are measured, cut and braided according to extension requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Braided hair piece is sealed into client's hair using the C2 clamp. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hair extension styled according to the client's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The mechanical hair extension procedure is performed within the required time frame and safety and client comfort is adhered to throughout the services.

    Discuss, explain and apply the use of after care products and services.

    The correct after care products are identified and explained as per hair extension service provided. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct after care product is applied according to manufacturer's instructions and client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is advised of home care treatment and products to maintain hair extension. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sales opportunities are identified throughout the hair extension service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A follow-up appointment is secured and the client record card is completed according to requirements.
