PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable learners to:
  • Identify sound recording processes and techniques.
  • Monitor environments
  • Select production procedures
  • Produce a multitrack sound recording for mixing, foley and mastering purposes.

    The unit standard contributes to the competence of those learners who want to pursue a career in Sound Engineering, and contribute to greater levels of competence, and thus productivity and quality in the Music Industry.

    The following competencies are assumed for a learner embarking on the unit standard:

    Identify sound recording processes (including acoustics) to prepare for recordings.

    Recording processes are identified according to sound requirements.

    Recording and micing techniques are implemented, appropriate to the recording project.

    Equipment is selected which is suited to the application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Accoustics of recording area environment is identified to assess the impact of the environment on the sound.

    Acoustic adjustments are made to optimise sound quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and select analog recording formats for recording.

    Analog recording format is selected which is suited to the requirement.

    Analog tape and speed is chosen which is appropriate for the application.

    Timecodes and slates are striped onto tape, correctly.

    Signal to noise ratios are maintained to ensure optimal compliance to sound requirements.

    Signal to noise/error ratios are maintained to ensure optimal compliance to sound requirements.

    Identify and select environment and audio workstation for recording and monitoring.

    A monitoring system is utilised which is sonicly neutral. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reference music and test tones are used to monitor that environment is optimal for purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A digital audio workstation is selected which is optimal for the desired sound product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Digital adjustments are performed to achieve an optimal stereo master level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A digital multitrack recording is created which is optimal for the desired sound product.
