A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:
Cleaning of evaporator vessels to achieve optimum evaporator performance 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have:
  • Literacy and communications NQF 1
  • Numeracy NQF 1
  • Basic understanding of sugar processing
  • Basic knowledge of quality assurance systems
  • An understanding of general safety in the workplace at NQF 1 or equivalent 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The learner is expected to perform the specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard without direct supervision, but with access to standard operating procedures.The scope of this unit standard extends to the mechanical cleaning of entrainment separators, condensers and other ancillary equipment used as part of the evaporation process.

    Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes. In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:

    Understanding of:
  • Scale formation
  • Basic principles of evaporator cleaning

    Reasons for:
  • Shutting down the evaporation station according to standard operating procedures
  • Ensuring that scato scalers are in good working order and that operators have been inducted/trained in the correct use thereof, and/or
  • Cleaning chemicals are prepared according to standard operating procedures
  • Monitoring the automatic chemical cleaning cycle and reporting any deviations
  • Repeating the pressure test after the tube repairs
  • Preparing the evaporation station for start-up

    Consequences of not
  • Adhering to safety procedures
  • Inspecting the cleaned vessel and ensuring that non-conformances are corrected
  • Pressure testing and identifying leaking tubes
