PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The person credited with this unit standard will be able to maintain and prepare line and long line fishing gear ready for deployment and retrieval of line and long line fishing gear to the vessel. They will also be able to apply initial aspects of seafood handling specific to line and long line fishing operations.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

Land, contain and sort the catch.

The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:

Maintain lines and long lines ready for deployment.

OUTCOME RANGE

Lines include, but are not limited to: surface long lines (tuna, other species); bottom set long lines, trot lines, drop lines, monofilament gear, rope gear.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Lines are checked for serviceability in accordance with standard industry practice and enterprise procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Lines checked for: broken, blunt or bent components, security of connecting devices, knots and lashings, by-catch reduction devices.
Ropes: checked for wear.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Worn or damaged line components are identified and reconditioned or replaced in accordance with standard operating procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Components include, but are not limited to: floats, detection devices (flag poles, lights, RADAR reflectors, radio transponders), connecting devices, retrieval devices, main lines, branch lines or snoods, hooks, ballast, bait, by-catch reduction devices.
Reconditioning includes: re-splicing ropes, coiling and uncoiling lines, re-tying, re-splicing or re-collaring connections, straightening clips, sharpening hooks, replacing bait.

Equipment used to deploy lines from the vessel is operated in accordance with standard safety procedures and enterprise procedures.

Equipment includes, but is not limited to: auto line systems, deploying devices (line drum, line shooter, bait thrower, line basket), retrieval devices (capstan, line drum, line hauler), branch line coiler, gaff, play lines, lifting gear (hydraulic crane, mast and boom, block and tackle).

Line floats, dan poles and weights are deployed in a manner that ensures gear is not fouled.

Clips, branch lines and snoods are baited and connected to lines in a manner that minimizes fouling and twisting in accordance with standard fishing practices and enterprise procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Containment devices are prepared to receive the catch in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Containment devices include, but are not limited to: brine tanks (kill tanks), ice slurry, fresh water tanks, ice rooms, fish handling and sorting areas, fish boxes (wash boxes, exchangeable market boxes, freezing cartons, "coffins")
Preparation includes: cleaning, disinfecting, assembling freezing cartons, applying freezing carton liners, accounting for exchangeable market boxes, ergonomic arrangement of boxes sufficient for sorting, arrangement of brine tank hatches.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The catch is loaded into the containment devices in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The catch is sorted in a manner that optimises seafood quality and survival of the by-catch in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Sorting done according to: species, legal length, size, gender, sexual stage, as by-catch, or as seafood for retention.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE

The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that, for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance. UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA

Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:

Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.

Make sure that evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.

The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.

The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.

All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, directness, authenticity, sufficiency, systematicity, openness and consistency.

The following particular issues should be taken into consideration when assessing against this unit standard:

All candidates to be assessed for this unit standard are required to provide evidence of competence (obtained by attending an approved course) in the following:

(i) Basic First Aid.
(ii) Fire Fighting.

Evidence is required with regard to the candidate being medically fit.

The importance of both safety and due care and consideration for the environment is to be kept in mind when assessing a candidate for this unit standard.
