PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to comply with all health, safety and environmental issues in footwear processes through preventing accidents, following emergency procedures, labelling hazardous substances and protecting self, machines and the environment. Learners involved in any elective area will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification and will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Learners will also communicate verbally and in writing at ABET Level 4. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The standard applies to all processes within clicking, closing, making, bottoms, finishing and dressing, and pattern cutting and design.

2. A safe working environment is maintained applying health and safety legislation as well as company safety policies and procedures.

3. Walk about is conducted and unsafe areas are pointed out in accordance with standard operating procedures and safety legislation.

4. Verbal explanations of relevant safety legislation is demonstrated.

1. Appropriate clothing is worn during footwear processes applying manufacturers specifications and health and safety legislation.

2. Machines are protected and any malfunctions that could injure self or cause machine breakdown is prevented applying manufactures specifications.

3. Environment is protected applying environmental specifications.
