PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are, or seek to be, active in socio-economic development in South Africa. It introduces the learner to information about a variety of socio-economic development theories. It also provides the learner with an understanding of how these theories apply in South Africa so that they can contextualise their own activities.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Define the nature of socio-economic development and distinguish between a range of classic and contemporary development theories.
  • Compare and contrast the range of theories of socio-economic development.
  • Analyse a range of the most influential socio-economic development theories in the South African context.
  • Identify and explain some project options for implementing local economic development.

    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication at NQF Level 3.

  • Contemporary development theories refer to Endogenous Growth; Co-ordination Failure; Multiple Equilibria; Kremer`s O-Ring Theory.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or will assess this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQ, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
